Reminders from Nebraska architecture
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting with members of IABC Lincoln to discuss communication and technology. But before this session, I sat in in front of the Ferguson Center (the host location for our discussion) and the Nebraska Statehouse.
These buildings caused me to think about two elements within the four areas of focus that IABC will be pursuing this year.
First, the Ferguson Center plays a significant role in Lincoln’s history. But, over the years, some people have wanted to demolish the building for such things as a parking lot. Progress at the expense of historical value. Fortunately, other people have successfully dedicated time and resources to preserve the center for the value that the building offers future generations.
Second, the Nebraska Statehouse — as I learned from Marcia White, ABC — was the first statehouse in the nation that “broke the mold” for statehouses, and “radically depart from the prototypical form of the nation’s Capital.” Unique, functional, and distinguishable.
Remembering and valuing IABC’s rich history is important. And at the same time, we need to be willing to “break the mold” to pursue new thinking and new approaches to continually improve IABC.
So, I’ve been asked by serveral people, “aren’t there any challenges in front of IABC?” And I have answered, “absolutely!” Our challenge is continually asking the tough questions that often result in change. What questions do you have that are or can result in positive change for your members, chapters, regions, and International?

Thanks for these! All great questions, that I’m capturing for inclusion in the Executive Board’s issues identification and prioritization process. Keep them coming.
