The “Oscars” of Communication
I’ve just returned from the Gold Quill Blue Ribbon Panel where around 35 judges from all parts of the globe reviewed some of the best communication programs and elements to select the best of the best that will be recognized at the IABC International Conference in New Orleans, 24-27 June 2007. Our Gold Quill program was identified during our recent brand initiative as a distinguishing member and profession value. I want to share a few of my observations that explain what goes into that value …
I’ve already mentioned my fellow judges who brought together an amazing wealth of knowledge and skill, and approached judging with passion and conviction to recognize excellent communications. I observed the culture of IABC in action: hard work and dedication, mixed with periods of fun and laughter. And in the process we all made new friends and reconnecting with old friends — collaborating in our judging, engaging in vibrant conversation, and socializing over wonderful food and beverages.
Leading the months of behind-the-scenes prep, culminating with the two-day, deadline driven, anything could — but thankfully didn’t — go wrong Blue Ribbon Panel were Jennifer Wah, ABC, our Gold Quill Chair, and Angela Franta, our Director of Recognition Programs. Angela has this program down to a science, and Jennifer — with the help of our Gold Quill Vice Chair Jeffrey Ory, ABC – set the stage with Oscar statues (chocolate) and gift bags (donated by Sephora) that would rival any Academy Awards experience.
The IABC information technology team launched version 2 of the online judging form, which increases accuracy and makes it possible to provide detailed feedback. Chris Hall and his team have created a resource that adds value and quality to the judging and entrant experience. Angela and Chris are planning to incorporate the online form into the first tier judging.
Many other headquarters staff members supported us throughout the weekend — sunny weekend, by the way. And you might say “well, that’s their job,” but when you talk to them, you also learn that they are also passionate and the Gold Quill Awards program and the interaction that they have with IABC member/volunteers.
Did I mention food? It has become a tradition that we end the weekend with a thank you dinner. This year’s dinner was hosted by Paul Matalucci, IABC member, Blue Ribbon Panel judge, and Founder/Principal of Wordwright Communications. With surprise red carpet towncar service, a spectacular view of the San Francisco bay, and a gourmet catered meal, the judges truly felt like celebrities.
My Gold Quill experiences are always high-quality and memorable … I just want to recognize and thank all the staff members and members/volunteers who continue to make this program one that members and the profession view as a unique brand value. Thanks for adding to my IABC memories. See you at the Gold Quill Banquet sponsored by our colleagues at Towers Perrin!

Thanks for the kind words, Todd.
I was humbled to see such talent assembled in one location to review and judge the best of the best in business communication from around the world. As one former Gold Quill winner who was with us remarked: “I have a new appreciation for how hard it is to win! These judges are holding the bar REALLY high.”
We certainly did, and I’m proud of that.
For others reading this who may be wondering how you can get in on a exclusive gig like the Gold Quill Blue Ribbon Panel, here are my tips for increasing your chances of an invitation someday:
1. Do great work; hold the bar high in your own workplace, always making sure you know your audience and are measuring your communication objectives against your organization’s bottom line, whatever that may be.
2. Enter (and win) Gold Quill: Our own peer-judged program is the only global award of its kind, and a valuable learning experience.
3. Judge IABC awards: You’ll gain invaluable insight into #1 and #2, above; you’ll get inspired, and you’ll help us all learn from your experience.
4. Become accredited: Three-quarters of this year’s Blue Ribbon Panel proudly wear the letters “ABC” after their names. Most of them have done all three of the above, and every day they uphold the high standards they know firsthand from their accreditation experience.
IABC’s Gold Quill Awards program IS unique, but so are the many steps and people involved who make it so.
See you on the red carpet in New Orleans!

What Suzanne said.
This was one of the best years ever, and big thanks to Jennifer, Paul, staff (particularly Chris and the tech team), and all the fellow judges. My only regret - I think I gained 5 lbs from all the food.

The Blue Panel Judging experience was camaraderie, cooperation, hard work and respect at the zenith. And huge doses of fun! It embodied the essence and meaning of the “I”: a truly awesome IABC adventure. It’s not everyday that one cops an Oscar (even when it’s one to be eaten!) and I’ll treasure the memory of winning one for being a communications professional. Thanks to all the coordinators, hosts, caterers and fellow judges who made the weekend truly memorable. Cheers all round!
