IABC Cares
The following notice will be sent to all IABC chapters on Monday, September 12th.
IABC Cares
Our IABC colleagues in New Orleans have suffered devastating loss with Hurricane Katrina. Here’s your chance to help.
The IABC Southern Region has established the IABC Southern Region Katrina Relief Fund benefiting the 39 members who are now facing rebuilding their entire lives. Please help us raise money - our goal is to raise $5,000 by November 18, 2005, so we can distribute funds to our members by December 1.
We are asking each chapter in the Southern Region to raise $200 or more to contribute to the fund. The Southern Region has set aside a Special Grant for $500. In addition, we hope that IABC Chapters across the nation and the world will contribute what they can to the fund.
What can you do
There are many ways you can raise money for our colleagues in New Orleans. Here are some ideas:
- Set out a basket at each IABC event collecting donations for the fund.
- Add a $5/$10/$25 donation option to you event registrations. For example, add a line to your online registration or event attendance confirmation that says, “Would you like to add $5 to your registration to go toward the IABC Southern Region Katrina Relief Fund?” You could also implement this idea with pay at the door guests.
- Designate October and/or November as Katrina Relief Month and donate all the profit from your events to the fund.
- Let your employers know that donations to the fund are welcome and will benefit the members of IABC in New Orleans.
- Donate what you can from your chapter’s community relations budget.
Here’s how it will work:
- Collect donations starting now until November 18, 2005.
- Please send ONE check for the total amount your chapter has collected/donated to: Betsy Pasley, ABC, Treasurer - IABC Southern Region, 13911 Chisom Creek, San Antonio, TX 78249.
- Make your check payable to IABC Southern Region.
- Please send checks no later than November 18, 2005.
- IABC Southern Region will forward the entire amount to a New Orleans chapter contact for distribution to local members as the chapter representative sees fit.
The fine print:
- Sorry, but we cannot process credit card charges.
- Thanks to Cat Wilson at Regnier Valdez for her assistance in design and layout of this information.

Please note: The IABC Southern Region was in contact with chapters in Alabama and Mississippi who have deferred participation as recipients as their members are mostly unaffected - thank goodness.

This is excellent! Congratulations to Lisa and the others in the US Southern Region who are spearheading this effort.

I echo Robert’s comment. This is a wonderful effort and really shows the collective strength of IABC.

Thanks Southern Region for helping our members rebuild their lives.

Were NO chapter members the only ones affected? None in the other states?

The Southern Region was in contact with chapters in Alabama and Mississippi and it appears it was only members in NO that were affected.

I’m encouraging the members of IABC Manitoba (Canada) to get involved in this worthy effort. I hope that delegates at the upcoming Canada Conference in Halifax next month will also plan to fundraise.

Maybe IABC Canada can ask IABC headquarters for a list of what the refugees need, and see what’s on hand in the land of the Red River, where the locals understand floods.
Many IABC NO folks (”folks” seems to be the common word down south) work for themselves, and some I’d bet would just love to get a one-generation old computer already loaded with Office and In-Design and Frontpage.
This, of course, presupposes IABC headquarters has a list of what’s needed by various members who have lost much, and I’m betting some have lost all, of their possessions, less one carload, other than just plan cash.
This list may be at the southern region rather than in SF, if it exists.
Come to think of it, even good clothes for business meetings, assuming NO houses, including their closets are underwater.
And Gameboy Advances, no longer used by IABC children elsewhere with new X-Boxes.

Right now, CASH is king. I’ve been flooded with donation offers (office space, clothes, computers, etc.), but what I’m seeing/hearing is that for the immediate future, most of our members don’t know the status of their homes - so they don’t know what they’ve lost, what is safe, etc. What I AM hearing, is that everyone is counting their pennies to make up for the cost of temporary housing.
That said, I have saved all offers of donations, and will compile and send to our NO members so they know what’s available. Joy Powell, the NO CSM is starting to hear from our members as to their status now, so we will know exactly the situation our members face.

The Dallas/IABC board of directors wants to directly assist IABC members who have relocated temporarily or otherwise to the Dallas area due to Hurricane Katrina. Through the end of the year, were’s what we’re offering:
Free admission to monthly professional development meetings.
Dallas/IABC lunch meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month. Event details are available on our web site at http://www.dallasiabc.com.
Grants for the Southern Region Conference in College Station, Oct. 16-18, or the Dallas/IABC professional development day on Oct. 7 (details also on our web site).
Free posting to the Dallas/IABC freelance directory. Dallas/IABC hosts an online freelance directory that receives almost 15,000 views a month.
Networking opportunities, carpooling. Naturally, all of our events offer great networking opportunities. If transportation is an issue, our board of directors members come from all parts of the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex. We’d be glad to provide a ride if possible.
Anyone in our area who would like to take advantage of this offer may contact me at don.klausmeyer@att.net or (214) 893-9069, or Carrie Mamantov, Dallas/IABC technology director at Carrie.Mamantov@sabre-holdings.com or (214) 642-4586.
